Resurgence Of Cultism, Criminality Worries Rivers People
As the wave of cult-related activities and criminality continues to heighten in parts of Rivers State leading to many deaths and destruction of property worth millions of Naira, a cross section of Rivers people have expressed worry at the unfortunate development.
They described the rising tide of cult-related killings and violence to political tension and Police meddling in politics, urging the Police and other security agencies to live up to their responsibilities by taming the menace.
Reacting to the recent cult killings in Abua/Odual Local Government, a cross section of Rivers people called on the security agencies to live up to expectation by arresting the perpetrators of the act.
They also blamed the situation on the political class, who they accused of masterminding the crisis to achieve their political ambitions.
On his part, a community leader in the state, Chief Sunnie Chukwumele blamed the situation on the activities of the political elite.
Chief Chukwumele said that “Cultism, which politicians introduced into the state is now living with us, and until the politicians purge themselves, the problem will continue”.
According to him, time has come for the politicians to tell themselves the truth as what they have planted is now bringing forth fruit.
Chief Chukwumele also decried the high level of impunity in our environment, noting that, “no politician, irrespective of his political party is to be exonerated”.
Also speaking, a member of the interim executive of All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Andy Nweye blamed the problem on the activities of some desperate politicians who are bent on bringing down the administration of Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.
“We are gradually allowing it to come back it is part of plan by those who are desperate in pulling down the governor”.
Chief Nweye, who was a former state Director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), also appealed to the state Commissioner of Police to work with the Governor to stem the tide of cultism in the state.
