Insecurity: Chamber Charges Anambra Govt On Street Lights
The Onitsha Chamber of Commerce has urged the Anambra Government to provide street lights in Onitsha, to enhance security of businesses in the commercial city.
Dr Tim Anosike, President of the Chamber, made the appeal in an interview with newsmen in Onitsha.
Anosike said that the streetlights would enhance the confidence of the business community and allow for longer hours of business transactions.
He said that as the commercial hub of the South-East, the infrastructure in Onitsha needed to be upgraded to meet international standard.
“Anambra government as well as other state governments in the South-East must recognise this and give their commercial hub the necessary attention it deserves, like other commercial hubs within and outside the country.
“The issue of mounting streetlights in all nook and crannies of Onitsha is long overdue.
“And there is a need for the residents to collaborate with the police and vigilante groups to fish out hoodlums that constitute threat to the city.
“All these would go a long way to enhance security; thus, leading to traders having more business hours as it is been done in other commercial hubs,’’ he said.
Anosike also bemoaned the level of indiscipline and disorderliness in the commercial city.
“People in the commercial city should be made to observe some level of discipline in their conduct, whether in the market, bank, fuel station and most especially on the road.
“The crazy attitude of cutting corners on the road during traffic hold-ups is not acceptable in a city with traders that have virtually travelled to all parts of the country and all over the world and must have seen things done maturely,’’ he said.
