The 348 Christian pil
grims from Enugu State have pledged to devote special time to pray for the development of the state and country in Israel.
The Chairman of the Christian Pilgrims Board, Rev. Fr. John Nwafor made the pledge when he spoke at the Government House, Enugu,  before their departure to the Holy Land.
Nwafor said he was optimistic that their collective prayer would help the state and country to pull through their current challenges.
The chairman also pledged his commitment to ensure that the pilgrims remained good ambassadors throughout their stay in the Holy Land.
“On behalf of the pilgrims, I want to thank the government for the privilege given to us to make this trip.
“It is a spiritual exercise and we promise to pray for the state, country as well as our leaders.
“It is a life dream to be there and it is being realised. I promise the government that we are not going to disappoint them,’’ he said.
Addressing the pilgrims, Gov Sullivan Chime warned them against absconding, saying that it would not be in the interest of the state and the country.
Chime, represented by the Head of Service, Mr Chidi Ezema, urged the pilgrims not to travel with any article of trade.
“We do not expect anybody to abscond and we do not want to hear ugly stories. Remember that you are representing Enugu State and Nigeria.
“Do not do anything that will bring shame to the state and the country,’’ the governor said further.
A pilgrim, Mrs Ngozi Otahumelu, expressed optimism that the journey would transform her life and draw her closer to God.
“What I am going there to do is prayer and I know that God will hear our prayer,” she said.
Some of the pilgrims applauded President Goodluck Jonathan for the commencement of international flights at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.
They said it had reduced the stress of travelling from another state.
