‘Include Squash In Youth Games’
A renowned sports
analyst has said that the inclusion of squash in the itinerary of the forthcoming National Youth Games (NYG), would boost its development at the grassroots.
Taye Ige made the remarks in an interview with newsmen in Lagos.
“Youth is about development, grassroots is about development, and if it is being included now, it can only mean then that the game will be closer to the grassroots.
“And that means that you can have many younger persons to take active part in the sport, and then you can have them blossom in the next four or five years into major players of the game.
“And don’t forget that the game recently lost an opportunity to feature at the Olympics from 2020, but let’s hope that at least we have moved a step further.
“And next time we are bidding to become an Olympic game we will succeed”.
On his assessment of the development of squash, Ige, who is also the Chairman of the Squash Section of the Ikeja Country Club, told newsmen that the game had witnessed significant growth.
It will be recalled that squash was initially excluded from the events for the NYG, before the National Sports Commission (NSC) rescinded its decision on Monday.
The maiden NYG is expected to hold in Abuja from December 5 to 15.
