Enugu Releases Guidelines For LG Polls

Political Parties and their candidates ready to participate in the forthcoming Local Government / Councillorship elections slated for November 2, 2013? in Enugu State have been charged to observe the provisions of the Electoral Act of 2010, and the local government law as amended.

?The state Chief Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Boniface O. Eneh, who gave the charge while releasing the guidelines for the election, stated that each candidate for chairmanship shall pay a non refundable deposit of N200,000 and N50,000 for Councillorship candidates.

According to him, each political party shall conduct primaries for the candidates for the chairmanship and councillorship elections and shall forward the timetable of their primaries to the commission, adding that the party primaries shall be monitored by ENSIEC officials.

He said, “There must be a police permit which the ENSIEC officials on duty shall sight. Every political party shall inform ENSIEC of the venue of ?their primaries;” and no two political parties would be allowed to hold primaries in one arena on the same day.

While using the forum to assure all the contesting political parties and their candidates of a level playing ground, Dr. Eneh made it clear that no substitution would be allowed by the commission after screening of candidates.

The State Director, National Orientation Agency (NOA), Chief Augustine Okolie, commended the ENSIEC boss for his excellent performance in past elections in the state and urged him to continue in that respect by providing a level playing ground to all the political parties as usual.

He also used the occasion to advice all the participating political parties and their candidates to adhere strictly to the Electoral Act, 2010, and the guidelines.
