Police Nab Fake Currency Trafficker In Ebonyi
The Ebonyi State Police Command has arrested one Stephen Chukwu, a native of Amaifeke in Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State, for possessing fake naira notes worth N1 million.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Sylvester Igbo, said the suspect was arrested on July 4 when he visited a bureau de change to convert the money to dollars.
Igbo said an agent in the bureau, Alhaji Lawal Ibrahim, identified the money as fake during the transaction.
“Ibrahim took him to a commercial bank where it was further confirmed that the notes were fake, as this led to suspect’s immediate arrest,” he said.
According to Igbo, the fake notes have been recovered from the suspect as he is presently assisting the police in its investigations.
He thanked the people of the state for their assistance in checking crime and re-assured them of the command’s commitment to protect their lives and properties.
The suspect while speaking with newsmen, confessed to the crime and noted that he purchased the notes from one Ugochukwu who is based in Oguta, Imo.
In a related development, the command issued a 13-day ultimatum to motorists in the state to renew their vehicle particulars and replace improvised number plates.
“The command will from July 21 arrest and prosecute those who violate this directive. The command has observed with dismay, the indiscriminate use of vehicles without number plates, fake numbers plates or improvised ones. “The prevalence of such vehicles in the state poses security threat as they can be used for heinous and violent crimes,” he said.
