Okorocha Cautions Communities Against Chieftaincy Tussles
Governor Rochas
Okorocha of Imo State has cautioned those fomenting trouble in communities to have a re-think and desist from such acts.
Okorocha gave the warning while announcing the traditional ruler-nominees in four communities on Friday in Owerri.
The communities are Alulu and Okpala-Umuekwunne in Ngor-Okpala, Oboh Ihite-Afokwu in Ahiazu Mbaise and Izinobi in Ihite Uboma community.
The nominees are Mr Cletus Nwaogu for Alulu, Mr Kinsley Nwaiwu for Okpala-Umuekwunne, Mr Thomas Nwokedi for Oboh while Mr Romanus Anyalemechi was for Izinobi Community in Ihite Uboma.
The governor noted that settling disputes in the affected communities became necessary to foster unity in the state, and urged those whose chieftaincy tussles had been resolved to accept the result in good faith.
Okorocha reminded them that no community could develop in an atmosphere of rancour and acrimony and he promised to use his position to make sure that all communities with chieftaincy disputes resolve them amicably.
Meanwhile, the people of Obike in Ngor-Okpala Local Government Area and Awara in Uguta Local Government Area have protested against the outcome of the traditional rulers elections conducted in their areas.
They claimed the elections were fraught with irregularities. The placard carrying groups stormed Government House on Friday chanting songs and demanding audience with the governor.
Mr Christopher Onyeka, who spoke on behalf of the group, said due process was not followed.
He alleged that some youths who were not members of the community were sighted standing behind the opponents of their candidate Mr Martins Uju.
Onyeka called on the governor to cancel the election and investigate the matter as well conduct a fresh election that would be free and fair.
The people of Awara Autonomous Community, on the other hand, were protesting the declaration of the result of their election as inconclusive when, according to them, it was free and fair.
They asked the governor to declare their candidate Mr Andrew Okwebunwa winner of the election.
Addressing the protesters, the Chief of Staff to the governor, Mr Jude Ejiogu, represented by his Special Assistant, Mr Kelechi Okoro, commended the communities for their peaceful conduct.
He promised to channel their grievances to the governor for an amicable resolution of the problem.
