Okigwe Women Laud Micro-Water Scheme
Different women groups in communities in Okigwe area of Imo have expressed happiness over the impact of water facilities in the zone.
A cross section of women spoke on the improved livelihood of the community women through the water projects.
The women leader in Mbeke Community, Isiala Mbano local government area, Mrs Adamma Nwaukwa, expressed joy over the construction of a bore hole in the community’s health centre.
The project, which cost N911,000 was one of the three projects prioritised by the community; others are a health centre and rural electrification projects which cost N5.6 million and N3.5 million respectively.
“The borehole given to us by the community and social development programme is a very nice one because it has made a good impact on our health centre.
“Without water, and in this case a functional borehole, I don’t think any health centre can function properly.
“The women delivering here in the clinic can have clean water to drink and the community also benefit from using it; so we can say the borehole is a very nice project,’’ she said.
In Umuizi Umunkwo Community where a N3 million borehole was completed and made functional, Mrs Eze Eji, who spoke on behalf of the women, said that the availability of potable water had improved women’s well-being in the community.
Other community women who spoke, said they would always prefer potable water, health centres and market stalls as their immediate needs when prioritising projects as these affected their homes and children directly.
“The boreholes are doing very well; what the government is doing is very nice; we prefer this water more that the unwholesome water we got from wells and streams.
“Before this water came, we fetched water anyhow; but now that government brought the ideas and we choose this project because we need it, we like it very well,’’ Mrs Chidinma Anyanele, a community woman, said.
Other micro-water projects handled by the community and social development programme in the state include those in Ibeme Amaise and Umuna communities, which cost N1.2 million and N3 million respectively.
Other community water projects are those in Umudike, Obiorodo and Obiaoha.
