Corps Members Bemoan Poor Camp Facilities
Some members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), deployed to Enugu State Orientation Camp, have decried lack of basic amenities at the camp.
A cross section of the corps members, who spoke to newsmen at their induction ground in Enugu on Thursday, said they were yet to secure accommodation in the camp.
Mr Ifeanyi Ihedioha said that basic amenities like toilets and bathrooms were not available in the camp.
Ihedioha said lack of these basic amenities was detrimental to the health of corps members as they negated healthy living.
“I think the government should improve the state of sanitation at this camp. When you talk about the state of hygiene of this camp, honestly it is nothing to write home about.
“As am talking to you now, we don’t even have toilet or bathroom, where we can ease ourselves or take our bath,’’ he said.
Another corps member at the camp, Miss Mary Nwankwo, appealed to the state government to erect more structures to accommodate more corps members.
“We want the government to help us. Some of us are stranded, I have not got accommodation since I came to this camp,’’ she said.
In his remark, the state coordinator of the NYSC, Mr Hilary Nasamu, appealed to Governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu State, to improve feeding and provide water at the orientation camp.
“Permit me sir, to request for your kind statutory augmentation of feeding and permanent supply of water to the camp to improve sanitation.
In his response, Chime promised to improve the security at the camp.
Represented by the Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Mr Chijioke Agu,Chime also promised to create an ‘enabling environment’ in and outside the camp ground.
He lauded the NYSC for its War Against Poverty (WAP) initiative, saying it had encouraged emergence of budding entrepreneurs among corps members.
