The German Ambassador to Nigeria, Dorothee Janetz-Wenzel,  on Friday commended the Federal Government for giving fair treatment to women.

Janetz-Wenzel gave the commendation in Nsukka at an international colloquium with the theme, “Emergent Women’s Writing in German and African Literature,” at the Faculty of Arts, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).

She said that this was why many Nigerian women were at the helms of affairs in strategic institutions and agencies.

The envoy said it was because of this good treatment that enabled many women in Nigeria to contribute their quota nationally and internationally.

“Some women in Nigeria are at the helm of affairs because they are given opportunity and government believed in their potential.”I am happy that women are well-treated in Nigeria.” She said.

The ambassador expressed appreciation to the UNN management for organising the colloquium to support and encourage women, adding  it is from this kind of encouragement and support that some women are in powerful positions in various parts of the world.

She said the German embassy “will continue to partner with the university in its determination to become a world-class university’’.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Bartho Okolo, represented by Prof. Malachy Okwueze, solicited “continued support in our vision to make UNN one of the best in the world”.

He thanked the ambassador for honouring the invitation, noting that it showed the height of love she had for the institution.

, Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan on Legislative Matters, Mr Chijioke Edoga urged students to work hard as well as believe in God as a way of achieving their ambitions in life.

”The only way to achieve success is to work hard and have absolute trust in God. ‘`As a graduate of this university I will assist in presenting problems of this university to Mr President,’’ he said.

Earlier the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Prof. Uchenna Anyanwu, said the colloquium was a way of appreciating the giant strides of some women in literature and other fields of endeavour.

”No society can attain any meaningful development without the contributions of women,’’ he said.

Among those who received awards of excellence are the ambassador, Edeoga and Mr Festus Onogwu, who is the Chairman of Nsukka Amalgamated Traders Association.
