A South African court has ruled that convicted Nigerian drug dealer, Frank Nebolisa, may be allowed the use of his own laptop in prison.

Delivering judgment in an application brought by Nebolisa on infringement of his human right, Justice Kathy Sachwell granted him the use of the laptop under supervision.

“The applicant is to be allowed to receive reading material including a personal computer laptop and internet access, which he will use under supervision,” Satchwell said.

Nebolisa said he intended to use the laptop to study a computer and Internet certificate course at Intec College from the prison.

Satchwell ruled that the laptop be brought by his family and kept in a safe place to be determined by the Head of the Prison who would also determine the time of use.

The Judge, however, refused his application to be reclassified as Group A prisoner, from Group B, which would have given him privileges such as contact visits.

It was reported  that Nebolisa was convicted of drug dealing and of using a drug courier,

Sheryl Cwele, former wife of the Minister of State for Security, Siyabonga Cwele.

They are each serving 20 years in jail.
