Rotary, Journalists Partner On Service Delivery
The Rotary club of Port Harcourt, Rotary International, District 9140, has urged a stronger partnership with the media as a measure of increasing public understanding of Rotary club and its activities.
President of the District, Rtn Henry Sota gave the charge during a press conference with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Rivers State chapter, at Trans-Amadi District centre, to commemorate the 2013 Rotary media day and magazine month.
The president described the media as a channel in public relations which is critical to propagation of the objectives and goals of Rotary which is premised on selfless service delivery and humanitarian gestures.
Speaking on the central theme of “Peace through service”, the president said, Rotary was committed to addressing today’s most critical issues such as; children at risk, poverty and hunger, the environment, illiteracy and violence in addition to youths empowerment programme and other professionals, and vocational career development.
Rtn Henry Sota, who is a Paul Harris fellow, hinted that the areas of development focus, this year were peace building and conflict resolution, Disease prevention and treatment, Reduction of material and child mortality, water and sanitation, Basic Education and literacy promotion and community development and economic empowerment.
He said the club has already recorded a feat in vocational and community service through the provision vocational training for youths, and medical and infrastructural services to some communities.
In his remark, the Vice President of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Mr. Ayo Tamuno who led the team of journalists commended Rotary International for its commitment to the service of humanity.
Ayotamuno appealed to the club to extend its services to the rural areas of the society for optimal service delivery as the bulk of the masses, resides in the rural areas.
He also called on the organisation to extend its services to areas of critical concern such as HIV/AIDs awareness campaign and malaria prevention.
