Plaudits For Gokana Chairman Over Football Team
Commendations have been pouring in for the chairman of Gokana Local Government Council, Hon Demua Leede Demua over the formation and sustenance of Gokana United Football Club.
At the weekend, the club, campaigning in the Nationwide 2C of the amateur league defeated visiting Dynamites FC of Benin 1-0 to record their third straight victory in the league, scoring five and conceding no goals so far.
Moments after the game at the Bera Central Stadium in Gokana, chairman of the Benin outfit, Bernard Joman and coach. Anthony Emeodofu, jointly expressed their delight with Hon Demua for his commitment to grassroots football development and empowerment for the youths.
According to Joman, it is rare to see a politician, especially, a local government chairman undertake such a capital internsive venture for the benefit of the youth.
He said that Hon Demua deserved commendation for creating an effective avenue to take the youth out of the streets, provide them with a vocation and means of livelihood.
Coach Emeodofu, who was part of Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets and Flying Eagles of 1987 and 1989, respectively said that other local government chairmen should emulate the Gokana boss by investing in the development of the game and empowering their youth.
He noted that the grassroots remains the key to football development and talents in the national teams.
“By setting up this football club, the chairman has given his people the opportunity to explore their talents and contribute to the game in Nigeria. I wish that others will emulate him by taking such concrete steps rather than paying lip service to sports development.
In the week three match proper, it was a keenly contested affair between Gokana United and Dynamites.
However, being cheered on by an imperessive home crowd, the Gokana United, who were more positive and hungrier of the two scored off a set piece when Dornu Dennis riffled home the lone goal of the fixture.
With the victory, Gokana has now established a command leadership of the group’s league table
