The Umuahia Business District of Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) said it supplied pre-paid metres to 220 out of its 67,000 customers in February.

The District Manager, Mr Vincent Ekwekwu, said this in an interview with newsmen in Umuahia Tuesday.

He said that, currently, there was temporary suspension of distribution of the metres because of the recent change in policy but that, they were awaiting further directive on the distribution.

Ekwekwu said the district did not have the metres in stock, adding that allocation for Umuahia was at the Enugu zonal headquarters of the company.

When contacted on the development, some electricity consumers faulted the PHCN’s position.

“We are aware that government recently announced a change on the modalities to get the pre-paid metres across the nation.

“In Umuahia, we know that the change in policy will be used by PHCN officials to give excuses so as to continue the circulation of estimated electricity bills to customers,’’ Mrs Mary Umabli, a consumer, alleged.

Mr Daniel Kalu, another resident, said he paid money to PHCN with a promise that the metre would be supplied to him.

“More than seven months after, the equipment was yet to be supplied,’’ Kalu said.
