The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, has stressed the need for conducive environment in the country in order to educate Nigerians on how best to translate the nation’s resources for the benefit of the people, irrespective of tribe, religion or political party affiliations.
Alhaji Turku who spoke in Enugu during a town hall meeting organised by the South-East zone of the PDP, also stressed the need for unity and loyalty to pave way for a stronger Nigeria
The meeting which was part of the party’s reform and reconciliation plans was held at Nike Lake Resort Hotel, Enugu and among those in attendance were Governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu State, and his Ebonyi counterpart, Governor Martin Elechi, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, former national chairman of the party, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo, Senator Uche Chukwumerije , Senator Ayogu Eze, National Assembly members as well as other stakeholders from the zone.
“We need a starting point, we need to empower the people and we also need peaceful environment to forge ahead as a people. Let us build our nation on equity and fairness. We should forget yesterday and think of today and tomorrow”, he said.
He added that what was needed urgently was a peaceful environment, unity, commitment and loyalty to the country.
Earlier in his speech, the National Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party(South East), Col Austin Akobundu(Rtd) restated that the crisis in the South East Zone was actually not as intractable as they seemed from afar.
According to him, Anambra State would be the test case of their reconciliation endeavours, adding that as time approaches for the primaries and governor ship elections in the state, we have initiated various stakeholder consultations to ensure that all outstanding issues including ongoing court litigations are resolved on time”.
He said he was happy to report that for the first time , stakeholders in Anambra were coming together to find a solution to the crisis.
Akobundu stated that Imo State presented an entirely different but more encouraging scenario, saying that the reconciliation and rebuilding process in the state was almost complete.
According to him, the good news was that Imo people had remained strong PDP supporters despite electing an opposition governor by error.
“President Jonathan’s Transformation Agenda is on course in the South East but only the total rebuilding not rehabilitation of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway will sufficiently meet the criteria set by the president himself in his campaign promise to our people” he said.
Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu in his speech stated that the southeast was a firm believer in the unity of Nigeria, adding however that the party should use her overwhelming representation at the National Assembly to ensure the rotation of presidency among the six geopolitical zones of the country.
