The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), has kicked against any contemplated attempt by the government to increase the pump prices of petroleum products.

The NLC said in a statement signed by its Acting President, Comrade Promise Adewusi that the idea or plan to further increase fuel pump price was very unpopular.

He said “in the light of the above, we call on the government to forget the unpopular idea or plan to further mark up the prices of petroleum products.”

He said the congress commended the pronouncement of the Federal High Court on the deregulation of the down stream sector of the petroleum industry.

Comrade Adewusi said the congress believed that the issues of deregulation went beyond the fixing of the pump prices of petroleum products.

“The adverse effects of an unconscionable high cost, of petroleum products on the citizenry borne out of bad management of the petroleum sector are the court of the matter.”

The NLC acting president said “our insistence that the chapter two of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) be made justifiable to promote good governance and protect the welfare and well being of the Nigerian people.”

He described the Federal High Court pronouncement on the deregulation of the Petroleum Industry as a victory for democracy and the independence of judiciary.

The NLC statement read “the Nigerian Labour Congress applauds the judgment of the Federal High Court (FHC) on the issue of the deregulation of the downstream sector of the petroleum industry.

“This obviously is victory for democracy and the independence of the judiciary.

“We commend the plaintiff Barrister Bamidele Aturu for his doggedness and the Honourable Justice M. Bello for his courage to stand by the constitution.”
