The family of late Tesilimi Balogun, popularly known as Thunder Balogun, in Lagos presented a trophy for U-17 football championship in memory of their late father.

Rasheed Balogun, one of the ex-international sons, who spoke at the presentation, said that the competition was organised by Community Youth Sports Development Organisation (CYSDO).

Rasheed said that the competition was also to promote soccer from the grassroots and to engage the youths in football competition.

“Many of our young ones are roaming the streets without any idea of what to do with their lives.

“This championship will provide a platform for such hapless youths to find their bearings in the area of sports,” he said.

He said that the competition was strictly meant for the U-17 because such age brackets “were still within the stage of uncertainty’’.

According to him, 20 clubs have so far registered for the competition scheduled to start on March 11 at the Ikorodu.

The sponsor said that the winner would get N200,000, runners-up N120,000 and the third place winners N75,000.

The Chairman, Nigeria Football and Other Sports Supporters Club Yisa Basorun, who chaired the occasion, donated N50,000 for the best player of the competition.
