NUT Tasks FG On Teachers’ Housing Scheme
Mr Michael Olukoya, President, Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), has urged the Federal Government to make the proposed National Housing Scheme for teachers a reality.
Olukoya said that the scheme should not be used as a jamboree or propaganda.
The Federal Government had on October 16 inaugurated a 10-man committee to work out modalities to provide housing scheme for teachers in the country.
The NUT boss noted that the scheme was commendable but urged the Federal Government to be committed and make it “a dream come true.”
Olukoya said the scheme was designed in a way that the committee would go to each state government to seek for allocation of land for the scheme.
He said that the Federal Government should take the lead by allocating land in the Federal Capital Territory to kick-start the scheme for other state governments to emulate.
“We do not want this housing scheme to end up like propaganda. We want commitment on the part of the Federal Government.
Stressing, “we want the Federal Government to take the lead and let charity begin at home.
“There is land in the FCT, let the Federal Government start the allocation of land for the scheme and then, other state governors will follow,” he said.
