The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called on the government at all levels to save the lives of the people in the South East by rehabilitating the roads in the area.

The National Vice President of the union, in-charge of South East, Mr Chris Isiguzo, made the call in Awka at a public lecture as part of the NUJ Press Week organised by the Anambra State council.

Isiguzo also urged the governments to address the menace of flooding in the zone.

He similarly called on members of the National Assembly from the zone and the governors to do more for the people in order to save their lives.

He listed roads like the Onitsha-Enugu expressway, Oba-Okigwe road and Port Harcourt-Aba-Enugu expressway among the death traps in the zone, saying that the bad state of the roads was not the only thing giving the people concern but also the erosion menace in the area.

He identified Isikwuato in Abia State, some communities in Imo, Anambra, Enugu and Ebonyi States as badly hit by the floods, adding that some of the communities had been cut-off from their people.

“We are not saying that these politicians from the area are not doing anything, but what they are doing is not enough to force the Federal Government to come to the aid of the people.

“All the federal roads in the South East had collapsed and very soon, people will start talking of being foreigners in their own land because of lack of communication with neighbouring states and that tells you the extent of dilapidation.

“Our governors should mount pressure on the Federal Government to convince those they are representing that they are working. We cannot continue to fold our hands and allow our people to die and derail the progress of the zone,” the journalist said.
