NGO Donates N1m Relief Materials To Displaced Persons
Soroptimist International Nigeria, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), has donated relief materials worth over N1 million to ameliorate the conditions of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Anambra State due to recent flooding.
The items included drugs, bedding, blankets, food stuff, clothing and cooked food.
A team of doctors from the organisation would also visit the various IDP camps in the state for on-the-spot medical diagnoses and treatment of sick people.
Receiving the materials on behalf of the government on Sunday in Onitsha, Dr Justin Ijezie, Executive Secretary, Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), thanked the organisation for its kind gesture.
He said the government was in need of help to cater for thousands of people whose homes and means of livelihood were destroyed by the flood caused by the over flowing of River Niger.
“We could not thank you enough for this and other assistance you have rendered to our state and our people.
“On behalf of my governor and our people, we are grateful. I want to assure you that each of these items will be judiciously utilised and would get to those they were meant for.’’
Ijezie urged individuals, groups or corporate bodies to come to the aid of the government.
“Please assist us; no matter how little it is, we would appreciate it at this difficult time.”
Earlier, Mrs Chinwe Mbah, National Coordinator, Soroptimist International, said the organisation was in the state to sympathise and empathise with the government and people.
She said that she and other members of her team would visit all IDP camps in the state to “feel the pulse of the Internally Displaced Persons and what they are passing through’’.
“Just as the Holy Bible instructed us to visit those in hospitals, prisons and the needy; we are extending our visit to see to the need of the Internally Displaced Persons.
“We will give them materials and financial assistance our ability could carry,’’ Mbah said.
