The Rivers State Commissioner for Sports, Hon Fred Igwe has
called on corporate and multinational organisations in the state to support the
promotion and development of grassroots sports in the state.

Hon. Igwe made the
call at the weekend during the inauguration of the 18 member Local Organising
Committee (L.O.C) for the 5th National Schools Sports Festival billed to hold
in Port Harcourt later in the year.

According to him, the promotion and development of sports in
the state is a task that should be given all needed attention and support in
order to achieve the desired result at the local, state, national and
international levels.

He however, noted that some corporate organisations have
began to yield to the call by indicating interest in hosting a competition
tagged the “principal’s cup competition” and “Inter-local government
competition with focus on  ‘athletics and
field events’.

The corporate organisations that have shown interest to
sponsor these competitions include the Niger Delta Development Commission
(NDDC), Gurantee Trust Bank,  and
Industrial and General Insurance, IGI company.

Meanwhile, the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) is
currently sponsoring  an Inter Local
Government Competition in the state tagged Governor’s Cup,” Hon Igwe said.

He further urged other multi-national bodies and corporate
organisations to emulate the gesture rather than sitting on the fence.
