RVHA To Partner UNIPORT Linguistics Dept

The Deputy Speaker of Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon. Leyii Kwanee says the House would partner with the Department of Linguistics and Communication, Studies in the area of communication, public speaking, persuassion and specialised writing.

Hon. Kwanee, who represented Khana Constituency II in the Assembly, stated this last Wednesday when a delegation from the Department of Linguistics and Communication Studies in University of Port Harcourt paid him a courtesy visit in his office in Port Harcourt.

The lawmaker said such training was not only going to be for the legislature, but for the support staff noting that the partnership was necessary to enhance the process of lawmaking. He lauded the Department for proposing a new course on political communication and public policy, emphasizing that the course would enrich the skills of legislators to effectively represent their people.

Hon. Kwanee remarked that the Assembly appreciates the contributions of the University of Port Harcourt to quality manpower development in Rivers State, noting that the institution deserves to be encouraged to attain appropriate ranking among the comity of universities.

Earlier, the Head of Department, Dr. Walter Ihejirika, said they were in his office to appreciate his participation in a conference held in honour of Prof Sylvanus Ekwelie, a renowned African scholar in communication who retired from the department recently.

Dr. Ihejirika appealed to the Deputy Speaker to avail the students of the department opportunity to interact with him to enable them obtain first hand information on legislative procedure to enrich their knowledge of democratic governance.

He disclosed  that the department was engaging in proactive development of courses to ensure relevance in the present competitive global setting, adding that the proposed course on political communication and public policy will be beneficial to political leaders in the country.
