Elechi Amadi Hails Introduction Of ICT Into School Curriculum
The Chairman, Rivers State Scholarship Board, Captain Elechi
Amadi (rtd) has described the introduction of the Information and Communication
Technology (ICT) into the school curriculum as a welcomed development.
The RSSB boss, who spoke at his country home Aluu in Ikwerre
local council over the week, said the development will enable students to begin
early to appreciate the importance of ICT.
Amadi noted that ICT has come to stay, and has so far
provided the answer to numerous problems facing the students.
He pointed out that it has also reduced the risk of
traveling around by students and others who are in need of some materials to
aid their academic work.
The poet recalled how he spent days in Universities of
Ibadan and Ahamadu Bello when he was writing one of his books (Ethics in
Nigeria Culture).
According to him, the innovation has enhanced students’
performance in the area of research and speed in academic works.
He noted with dismay how top government functionaries still
fumble with their speeches in this present computer age.
To him, it is a clear indication of laxity on their part,
pointing out that they have refused to join the moving train.
He disagreed that the computer/ICT is affecting the reading
culture, but said that over explosion in the means of communication is to be
blamed.
The former Commissioner of Education also believed a
situation where people watch movies on ipad, iphone has drastically discouraged
them from reading.
Apart from that, he said that students now have broad
knowledge on so many issues despite their non reading habit due to the ICT
introduction.
“ICT helps you in your profession: if you are a chemist, it
does not stop you, if you are a historian, same thing, so ICT is everywhere”-
he said.
