The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) between January and June arrested 61 alleged drug dealers in Enugu State, the Commander, Mr Anthony Ohanyere, has said.

Ohanyere said in Enugu on Tuesday that the agency also prosecuted 18 drug offenders and counselled 22.

He said 419.2 kilogrammes of cannabis and 31.9 grammes of cocaine were seized during the period.

“We have been trying our best in reducing the peddling of drugs in Enugu as we do not have many growers in the state.

“Our target is the barons, who play crucial role in the drug supply chain, because if we succeed in cutting the source of supply, the users will have no place to buy,’’ the commandant said.

He said that the only cannabis growing farm identified at Enugu Ezike in Igboeze North Local Government Area of the state had been destroyed.

The commander said that the agency had intensified raids on houses and public places, and appealed to the media to partner with the agency to fight drug abuse.

Ohanyere said that the agency was collaborating with appropriate security agencies in the fight against hard drugs through intensified seminars and workshops.

He expressed concern that most parents did not monitor their children and wards in their early involvement in drug intake to curb its effect on time.

The commander advised parents and guardians to be conscious of the company their children kept.
