Ebonyi Plans Permanent Refuse Dump Site
The Ebonyi Commissioner for Environment, Chief Paul Okorie, said last Saturday that work had begun on the permanent refuse dump site in Abakaliki.
Okorie told newsmen after the monthly sanitation exercise that a team of soil experts had started a baseline study of the acquired portion of land to ascertain the necessary soil requirements.
“This will assist in determining the appropriate scientific method to apply in land filling and composite facilitation.
According to Okorie, the large heap of refuse noticed in several parts of Abakaliki recently, is due to the rehabilitation work at the temporary dump site on Enugu-Abakaliki Road.
“The road leading to the site is in poor shape and this disrupts the efficient operation of our waste disposal trucks.
“A truck disposes refuse on the site between 12 to 13 times daily when the entrance was accessible, but it can only do so about four times now.
“We are therefore inaugurating an alternative route to the site which has reached its casting stage,” he said.
The commissioner noted that the ongoing evacuation of waste from different parts of the town, was to prevent flooding.
“The process has been massive as the slabs of most drainage have been entirely replaced,” he said.
The commissioner commended residents who defied the downpour to participate in the exercise.
He called on residents with filthy surroundings to clean them as soon as possible to avoid prosecution.
