Rivers State Information and Communications Commissioner,
Mrs Ibim Semenitari has identified academic proficiency and passion as key
considerations for making career choices.

Mrs Semenitari said
this while speaking to children of the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt GRA
Chapter, who were on a visit to her office as part of activities to mark the
Rotary Career Day.

She said that any career choice made outside these key
considerations would likely create some challenge for the child in the future.

Mrs Semenitari insisted that the role of guidance and
counseling department in the school system should be strengthened for the
achievement of academic and career excellence.

According to the states information and communications boss,
“the era when parents forced their children to go into a particular career,
most of the time where the child is academically weak and lacks passion for,
should end for good.

“I think what the children deserve is dispassionate guidance
from parents and the school guidance and counseling experts and not forcing
them to study academic courses or go into careers where they are least
passionate about and naturally not talented to excel in”, she noted.
