NGS Nike Wins Enugu Schools Sports Festival
The 2012 Enugu state Secondary Schools Sports Festival in which over 300 public secondary schools in the state participated has ended with the National Grammar School Nike emerging the overall champion.
The School Sports Festival which was revived by the administration of Governor Chime in the state after over 20 years of oblivion, featured events like Ladies and Boys football, basketball, volley ball shot-put, high and long jump as well as athletics
National Grammar School Nike, lifted four trophies as champions in Football, Basket ball and Handball with the fourth trophy as the overall champion in the competition with a cash prize of N3 million made up of N2 million from government and N1 million personal donation by the State Governor, Barrister Sullivan Chime.
The second position was won by Queens School Enugu with a cash prize of N1 million from the State Government and N750,000 personal donation by the State Governor while Community Secondary School Umuokpu, Enugu-Ezike, Igboeze North went home with cash prize of N1million made up of N500,000 from the state government, N500,000 personal donation by Governor Chime.
In the finals of male football competition, Nike Grammar School Enugu defeated the Community Secondary School, Nkwe in Awgu Local Government Area by a lone goal, while Queens School Enugu emerged champion in the female category by beating Urban Girls Secondary School, Enugu by a lone goal.
In athletics, Ugwoke Meltus of Nsukka High School, emerged champion in 100 metre race for males while Agu Blessing of Girls Secondary School Aku won the 100 metre race in the female category.
Addressing the participants during the closing ceremony of the festival held at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Governor Chime made it clear that School Sports Festival has become an annual event in line with the policy of his administration to promote and encourage the development of all round sports in the state.
