Govt Assures On Compensation For Displaced Waterfront
The Rivers State Government, has reassured the displaced property owners at Abonnema Wharf in Port Harcourt who are yet to receive their package, of government resolve to pay compensations to all those that were displaced from their homes.
Commissioner for Urban Development and Physical Planning, Dr. Tammy Danagogo who gave the assurance in a Press statement stated that adequate arrangement has been already worked out with which to pay all the affected property owners, and urged them not to panic over the compensation.
He said that the action of government was a quick intervention to save lives, which was informed by the negative security reports from Abonnnema Wharf, where criminals use as a base to launch their criminal activities.
Meanwhile some human rights organisations have been reacting to the recent demolition of structures at the Abonnema Wharf, alleging that such government action did not follow the due process.
The Amnesty International in a statement in Port Harcourt condemned such quick action that did not give the people time to prepare themselves for an alternative accommodation.
The rights group also said that government did not follow the due process, in the demolition of properties at the area, and urged the state government to ensure that something was done very fast to settle the people, most of whom were yet to be compensated.
Amnesty International however said that it will assist the displace persons in ensuring that they were compensated, as well as have an alternative place of residence, which, it said, is one of their basic right as citizens.
