FIDA To Assist Displaced Women

The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), has said that it will assist displaced widows and women from Abonnema Wharf to secure compensation, as well as have alternative place for residence.

FIDA Chairperson, Eucharia Pepple who made this known to newsmen in Port Harcourt while reacting to the recent demolition of structures at the Abonnema Wharf, noted that women, mostly widows were the most vulnerable group in such cases of displacement.

She pointed out that FIDA as a non Governmental organisation of women is out to champion the course of womanhood, and will ensure that women do not suffer unnecessarily.

The FIDA Chairperson said that her organisation will not relent in its efforts to see that widows and other women, who were not yet compensated in the Abonnema Wharf matter, were compensated and that they secure another place for accommodation.

Pepple posited that FIDA is interested in the matter because most of the women were taken unawares and have not secured an alternative accommodation, adding that all the services that FIDA will render to these women will be free of charge.

She therefore urged the affected women, particularly widows to come to the FIDA office for proper identification and documentation.

Meanwhile some non-governmental organisations in Rivers State, as well as human rights organisations have been offering one form of assistance or the other to the displaced people.
