The Director- General of Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC), Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, has said that the organisation will introduce golf in two schools in each geopolitical zone in Nigeria.

Runsewe said the step was aimed at teaching the game from its rudiments, according to a statement, issued by a Press Officer with NTDC,  Mr Wilfred Orhue, in Abuja.

Runsewe said during a visit by Mrs Anne Addeh, Lady Captain of IBB International Golf Club, Abuja, that it was aimed at “catching them young and creating programmes to constantly train the youth on the game”.

He said it was also aimed at building future Olympic golfers for Nigeria.

According to him, the essence of the initiative is to expose the youth to professional golfing while tapping into the huge financial resources available in the game.

“Golf is a professional game that can only be learnt by adhering to its procedural technicalities; in developed countries, children start learning golf from a tender age,’’ Runsewe said.

He said this accounted for the high number of professional golfers found in advanced countries.

“As a people, we must realise that golf is a big business all over the world and you can never get golf right except you start from age three.

“That’s the standard and other countries of the world are now making major returns from golf alone as a sport,’’ Runsewe said.

In her response, Addeh expressed gratitude to the corporation, adding that the club would ensure that young ones learnt the game to become future golfers.
