Focus On Education, Sports, Fashola Tells Athletes
Lagos State governor, Babatude Fashola has urged the state’s athletes to work hard in education and sports to enable them to build a strong future career.
Fashola gave the advice at the closing of the state’s sports festival, tagged “Ibile Games’’, at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere.
He described the Games as an investment in the youths with a view to bringing out the best in them.
The governor expressed satisfaction with the level playing field provided the athletes at the 12-day sports fiesta.
“Ibile Games is an investment built in the youths to bring out the best in them and to bring back what sports used to be in the past.
“I urge all competitors, those that won and those that lost, to continue to work hard because they will still have another opportunity to compete,” Fashola said.
The governor commended the athletes, technical officials, sports officers, Local Government Chairmen and the Ministry of Youths, Sports and Social Development for making the programme a big success.
No fewer than 1,500 athletes from schools, 20 local government areas (LGAs) and 37 local council development areas (LCDAs) took part in the Games.
The Games which began on May 14 featured 25 events at seven venues, including the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Centre, the University of Lagos and the Teslim Balogun Stadium.
Others are the Agege Stadium, Yaba College of Technology, the National Stadium, Surulere, and the Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos.
Yaba Local Government Area emerged the overall winner of the event with 361 medals, 158 gold, 104 silver and 99 bronze medals.
Bariga LCDA was second with 388 medals, 153 gold, 120 silver and 115 bronze while Lagos Island came third with 230 medals, comprising 86 gold, 72 silver and 72 bronze medals.
Ibeju-Lekki LCDA and Surulere LGA were occupied the fourth and fifth positions respectively with 110 and 66 medals.
The former bagged 17 gold, 48 silver, and 45 bronze medals, and the latter garnered 17 gold, 25 silver, and 24 bronze medals.
