TUC Laments Bafyau’s Death
The Trade Union Congress (TUC), has described the death of
former Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Comrade Pascal Bafyau as another big loss to the
country’s labour movement.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, TUC President, Peter
Esele and the General Secretary John Kolawole said the late Bafyau was a great
labour leader and an eminent compatriot.
Esele described it as another big loss not only to the
labour movement in Nigeria but also the whole world.
“His tenure as the President of the NLC, which he led from
1988 to 1994 was marked by great achievements.
“His candour and responsiveness was one of the salutary
influences that helped Nigeria wade through the turbulence that preceded the
unwholesome abortion and truncation of the June 1993 election that was won by
the late M.K.O Abiola.
“He shall be remembered for the numerous struggles which he
led against the forces of oppression, especially in the dark ages of military
dictatorship in Nigeria and the pivotal role which he played in conjunction
with us in the formation of the Nigeria Labour Party.”
It stated that the Labour House in Abuja, Labour Transport
Services and the defunct Labour Bank “all bear his footprints’’.
The TUC condoled with the NLC, the family he left behind and
all workers in country for whose cause he lived and died.
