Amaechi Cup Gets LOC
The Rivers State Commissioner for Sports, Hon Fred Igwe yesterday inaugurated a 14 man Local Organising Committee (LOC) to plan and execute the first Port Harcourt Township (old) Borokiri soccer tournament,christened Amaechi Cup.
According to Hon Igwe, the Rivers State Governor, Rt Hon Chibuike Amaechi revamped the community sports centres spread across the old Port Harcourt Township, including No 1 filed where the tournament would be held to revive the beauty and serenity the old township once enjoyed and positively engage the energies of youths in the right direction.
He said that it was the governor’s top desire to make youths improve their lives through sports, because sports at all level is one of the best tools to directly affect lives, achieve proactive and constructive results in the right direction. The competition which has N10 million, N5million and N3million for first, second and third position winners, would have the Governor grace the opening and closing ceremonies as the field would also be officially opened with the competition.
He charged committee members whom he recognised as active participants in sports development at different levels to produce programmes for the competition, receive entries from interested teams, screen teams, arrange fixtures for the competition, and guarantee security for the competition which he described as vital for the success.
He added that in time, the governor would extend the same gesture to other parts of Rivers State.
The Chairman of the LOC, Coach Daboere Dokubo on behalf of the committee members thanked the Government of Rivers State and promised to ensure a successful tournament on behalf of the State which many residents of Port Harcourt will not forget in a long time.
