Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, may get a new drainage system to address  the perennial rain floods in the state.

To achieve this, the State Government is set to tackle the problem which had been a source of great concern to the people of Yenagoa and its environs.

The State Governor, Hon. Seriake Dickson stated this while inaugurating the Bayelsa State Infrastructural Advisory Committee in Government House, Yenagoa.

Governor Dickson said the main task of the committee is to develop a blue print on critical infrastructure for the state, adding however that before the main report of the committee is ready, the committee should come up with a preliminary report that will clearly highlight the problems militating against an efficient drainage system and proffer solutions on how to tackle them.

‘Your duty is to develop a blue print on critical infrastructure, compile a comprehensive list of all on-going projects in Yenagoa and take a review of the Yenagoa Master Plan with a view to correcting any shortcomings, in addition.

I will want the committee to take a holistic look at the drainage problem with a view to suggesting ways to make the drainage system more efficient”, the Governor declared.

According to Governor Dickson, the committee is also expected to develop a framework for partnership with other development partners in the area of critical infrastructure.

Hon. Dickson, who disclosed that he withdrew the budget that was submitted by a previous administration because it did not meet the developmental aspirations of the present administration, charged the members of the infrastructural advisory committee to come up with an interim report on the drainage situation of Yenagoa within one week so that part of their recommendations involving finance, can be captured in the budget to be re-presented to the State House of Assembly.

Responding on behalf of his members, chairman of the committee, Sir Charles Dorgu said the committee will get down to business immediately, adding however that the committee will be requiring a secretariat to facilitate its assignment.

While thanking government for the opportunity given to them to serve, Sir Dorgu assured the Governor of their willingness to work, stressing that they will not betray the confidence reposed in them.
