NPL Title Chase Open
Sunshine Stars blew their
chance of claiming the Nigerian Premier League title with a game to spare when they drew 2-2 at Ocean Boys.
Second-placed Dolphins held up their end of the bargain with 4-0 blow-out of Zamfara United, to take the title race to the last day.
Three points for the Akure side would have seen them all but claim the title on goal difference and they raced into a 2-0 lead early on.
But the home side, desperate to avoid relegation, fought back to claim a share of the spoils.
Dolphins duly took advantage to cut the lead to just one point going into the final game of the season this weekend.
In the battle for the Confederation Cup places, Warri Wolves moved above Kano Pillars with a 2-1 win over Gombe United.
Pillars were beaten 1-0 by Niger Tornadoes and now need a win over Sunshine Stars in the final game of the season, coupled with Wolves loss at Tornadoes to play in the continent next year.
Down at the bottom, Shooting Stars, Ocean Boys and Plateau United are all still in danger of dropping down to the lower league on the last day of the season.
All need wins to give themselves any chance of survival. Plateau have a difficult home fixture against Heartland, who beat Enyimba 2-0; Ocean Boys travel to Zamfara United while 3SC host Lobi Stars.
