The Enugu State Emergency Management Agency (ESEMA) has cautioned citizens of the state against bush burning and felling of trees to prevent disasters during the dry season.

The Executive Secretary of the agency, Mr Joe Offor, said in an interview with newsmen in Enugu, that disasters were better prevented than managed.

He decried the indiscriminate clearing and burning of farmlands during the dry season in preparation for the farming season.

According to him, the agency will embark on awareness campaign before the end of the year to enlighten the people on how to prevent man- made disasters.

Offor rated disasters which occurred in the state this year lower than that of 2010, adding that the agency in collaboration with stakeholders worked toward achieving the feat so far acheived.

“The level of disasters has been very minimal. I think that in this year, things are a whole lot easier because there were more devastations last year, especially during the rainy seasons, than this year.

“We recorded one or two serious incidences this year but last year in Okwe Nkwo in Enugu State, back to back in a two week cycle, the whole community was overrun by flood.’’

He urged the people of the state to use the dump sites to dispose their refuse instead of burning them.
