Governor  Sullivan Chime of Enugu State has charged the governing board of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) to restore the institution’s past glory.

Chime gave the charge on Wednesday in Enugu while inaugurating the seven-man governing board of the university.

He said that the restoration of the institution’s glory would reinstate the university’s status as one of Africa’s foremost centres for science and technology education.

He urged the board members to begin their job by implementing positive policies in the institution to eradicate social vices which trailed the institution.

The governor, represented by his deputy, Mr Sunday Onyebuchi, said the board was the highest decision-making body of the institution and would be held responsible for the success and failure of the institution.

“The inauguration of a new governing council of ESUT today becomes even more significant given the daunting problems and issues that had dogged the administration and operations of the institution in the recent past.

“The new governing council is indeed principally charged with the task of developing and implementing policies that will establish lasting order and discipline in all facets of the school’s administration and operations.

“The council should have as its paramount objective, the restoration of the school to its past glory as one of the Africa’s foremost centres for education in science and technology.’’

Chime assured the board of the state government’s support towards actualising their objectives.

Responding, Dr Chilo Offiah, the Chairman of the board, promised to work tirelessly with his colleagues to ensure the revival of the institution.

“The problems of ESUT, like most universities in Nigeria, are well-known. We will do everything in our power to make our presence felt and to reform ESUT within the shortest possible time.’’

The other members of the board are Mrs Maria Agu, Monsignor Obiora Ike, Prof. David Edeani, Dr Lawrence Anikpo, Igwe Vincent Ekwedigwe and Dr Carol Obayi.
