Delta State has

demonstrated supremacy over other states in the men’s wrestling event of the 17th National Sports Festival in Port Harcourt with four gold medals and a bronze.

Team Delta won the 55kg, 66kg, 74kg and 96kg and also the bronze in 120kg.

Rivers placed second with one gold, one silver and one bronze in the 84kg, 120kg and 66kg respectively, while Ondo placed third with one gold and two bronze medals in the 60kg, 66kg and 74kg respectively.

Joe Ositi, the Assistant Coach of Delta, said on Saturday at the Civic Centre, Port Harcourt venue of the event that he was impressed with his wrestlers.

He said he promised the state just three gold medals but now they had four.

Ositi said he was confident that the girls would repeat the same feat in their contest to confirm their supremacy over other states in the sport.

He said his wrestlers banked on hard work and perseverance, adding that the state should empower the athletes with employment for the sustenance of such record in the next festival.

“I am so happy today for the men’s brilliant performance. I hope the girls will win too but I urge the state government to give them employment for them to do more,” the coach said.
