Group Trains Youths On Peace Building
Kebetkache Women Development and Resource Centre in Collaboration with the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) has trained over 3,000 youths on peace building in the Niger Delta.
The Executive Director of Kebetkache women Development and Resource Centre, Ms Emem Okon who dropped the hint to newsmen immediately after the training progress recently, said the essence of the training was to build the skills and knowledge of youths in peace building and conflict management in the six geo-political zones.
According to her, the partnership with NED started with peace education for youths in conflict affected communities inorder to check the trend of conflict in the area.
She stated that the group was able to sensitize over 3,000 youths in Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa and Rivers State, adding that information education and communication materials (IEC) were distributed during the process.
The peace education sessions were facilitated by members of the women peace Corps trained by Kebetkechea in the course of the project, noting that the peace education recorded some success as some youths that participated in the community school-based peace education were those initially in violence but has decided to quit it.
Emem identified the consequences of conflict in the lives of people to include raping of the girl-child by security agents, sexual abuse and exploitation of women by order people.
Others are increased rate of teenage pregnancy and high rate of poverty among others.
She advised young politician and members of the various communities to shun violence and ensure that women should be part of the decision-making process in the communities.
