Estate Surveyor Blames Poverty On Dependence On Governments
A Lagos-based estate surveyor, Dr Meckson Okoro, has blamed poverty in the country on people’s over dependence on government.
Okoro said in Owerri on Tuesday that unless Nigerians realised the need for them to explore their individual potentials for economic benefits, the country’s poverty level would be on the increase. He told our correspondent that “It is only in Nigeria that people depend on government for almost everything”.
The estate surveyor said that elsewhere in the world, you did not need to rely on government to live well.
Okoro called on Nigerian entrepreneurs to rise up to the challenge of unemployment in the country by providing employment opportunities for the youths.
He said that for the country to grow economically, government should provide the enabling environment for the private sector to thrive and create wealth.
On performance of the various state governments in the South East, Okoro said that most of them had performed below expectations.
He urged the five state governments in the zone to emulate the Lagos State Government, which he said had transformed the state to an enviable standard.
He also called on the electorate in the zone to vote for governorship candidates, who would ensure economic transformation of the zone at the April general elections.
“My message to the Igbo is that they should look inwards and see whether the current administrations in the zone have performed.”
“But if they feel that something is left out undone, they should exercise their conscience and look for better alternatives,” he said.
