Lagos Wins National Schools Sports Festival
Lagos State has emerged the overall winner of the 3rd edition of the National Schools Sports Festival, tagged “Kano 2010”.
Lagos State won 54 gold, 61 silver and 57 bronze medals, while Ondo State came second with 52 gold, 29 silver and 34 bronze medals.
Kano State was third with 47 gold, 40 silver and 56 bronze medals.
The festival, held at Kofar Mata Sports Complex in Kano, opened on Saturday and ended on Thursday with 22 states participating.
The competition featured three categories, namely primary schools, junior and senior secondary schools.
The students competed in 15 events, including football, volleyball, handball, judo, taekwondo, weight lifting, chess and athletics.
In his address at the closing ceremony, Gov. Ibrahim Shekarau of Kano State, expressed satisfaction with the performance of the participants.
The governor, who was represented by the Commissioner of Lands and Physical Planning, Alhaji Ibrahim Yakasai, described sports as a means of promoting social integration and unifying different groups in the society.
