Ngo Slams LG Boss For Stopping Campaign

Women Initiative for the Needy International, a Non-Governmental Organisation, has berated the Chairman of Ahoada West Local Government Area, Hon. Miller Awori, for disrupting the group’s voters registration enlightenment campaign in the area.

The organisation currently on voters registration education campaign in the 23 local government areas of Rivers State in collaboration with United Nation Development Programme (UNDP) and the state Government had its activities disrupted by officials of the local government council at Joinkrama.

Speaking to newsmen in Port Harcourt, the lead consultant and President of the NGO, Princess (Mrs) Jennifer Spiff, alleged that the chairman sent a group of thugs to stop the NGO from educating the community members who had gathered for the enlightenment programme.

Princess Spiff noted that the campaign had been an eye opener to the community members who are now prepared for the forth coming voters registration and the 2011 election, wondering why the council Chairman should send people to attack the women and stop the campaign.

She stated that the group got to Mbiama, the venue of the campaign and saw Joint Task Force (JTF), Police, State Security Services (SSS) and others led by the leader of the local government legislative assembly, Hon. Karibo Wilson, who “called me out from the venue,” she said.

“I introduced myself to him and the security agents, showing them the letter of authority from government and UNDP. The security men, who saw no security threat from the programme understood and directed Hon. Wilson to call the Chairman and explain, but all fell on deaf ear. The thugs instead came and threatened us out of the hall and even trailed us to Joinkrama where they stopped us from alighting from the car, threatening to waste us, when the hall was packed full”.

All efforts made to see the chairman or any of the council officials for comment proved abortive.
