Mrs Sylva Harps On Detection Of Cancer

Wife of the Bayelsa State Governor, Mrs Alayingi Sylva, says early detection of breast cancer will reduce the risk of death among women carrier of the disease.

Mrs Sylva made this known recently in Yenagoa after a kilometre walk against cancer to commomerate the 2010 International Cancer Week in the state capital with the theme: ‘Towards a Cancer Free Bayelsa State’.

About 300 secondary schools girls drawn from different institutions in the state participated in the programme which is expected to last four days.

Mrs Sylva led the walk against cancer, accompanied by Mrs Iyorisite Saibarugu, wife of the deputy governor, Commissioner for Education, Mrs Josephine Ezonbodor, and Mrs Gimbra Pamowei, Commissioner for Gender and Social Development among others from the Peace Park to St Jude’s Government Girls Secondary School Amarata, where she addressed the participants.

In her address, titled ‘’Cancer Education in Schools: Why I am involved’’, Mrs Sylva, stressed the need to save the lives of innocent girls and women who are ignorant of the disease.

She regretted, the loss of lives due to cancer, emphasing the need for more awareness, especially among the young ones saying that her NGO, Centre for Gender Value and Culture was committed to building healthy youths and promote well being of the people of the state.

She therefore told the women and adolescent girls to take advantage of the vaccination and screening in the course of the celebration very serious.

In her presentation titled “Early Detection Saves Live’’, Dr Rosemary Ogu, of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, advised the school age girls to take special care of their breast and make themselves available for cancer screening.

Also speaking the Principal of the St. Jude’s Government Girls School, Mrs Benice Ifidi, commended the intiative of the wife of the governor to take the campaign against cancer to secondary schools.
