The Edo Government has assured athletes that it would accord all sports equal development.

A statement by Amina Afugbua, the Secretary, Edo Tennis Association (ETA), said on Thursday in Benin that the assurance was given by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Anita Evbuomwan.

The statement said Evbuomwan gave the assurance at the closing of the U-17 Tennis Championships sponsored by Edo Chief Judge, Justice Cromwell Idahosa.

“Sports are veritable tools for youth empowerment and development,” the commissioner was quoted as saying in the statement made available to newsmen.

It praised the chief judge for sponsoring the tennis competition and appealed to sports lovers to emulate him.

“ I appreciate the contribution of Idahosa to the development of tennis in Edo,” the statement said.

It said the commissioner announced that talents discovered at the championships would be part of the team to represent the state at this year’s National Sports Festival in Port Harcourt.

It also quoted Idahosa as saying: “It is my desire to establish a tournament in tennis that will be in the standard of Wimbledon and other tennis championship in Europe

“There is no reason why such tournaments cannot be in place in Nigeria, especially in Benin.”

The statement commended the participants for the spirit of sportsmanship they exhibited throughout the championships.

It would be recalled that 10 males and 10 females participated in the competition.
