Foster Chime, the Media Officer, Rangers International FC of Enugu, has urged the new Chairman, Nigeria Premier League (NPL), Davidson Owumi, to improve the local league and attract sponsorship to it.

Owumi, an Enugu-based sports administrator, was last weekend elected the NPL Chairman.

Chime said that Owumi’s election was a good omen, as he would boost the standard of the local league.

He advised the NPL to take up the responsibility of settling match indemnities of officials to improve officiating standards.

Chime explained that with the NPL taking over the settlement of match officials’ allowances rather than the clubs, corrupt practices in the league would cease.

He also urged the new chairman to introduce fresh programmes that would expose referees and other match officials to quality training, as this would improve their technical competence.

The media officer noted that players’ welfare was not taken seriously by club owners and urged Owumi to introduce a policy that would compel them to ensure timely settlement of players’ wages.

He further charged Owumi to seek ways of securing clubs’ financial rights as well as increasing the turnout of spectators at league matches.

“Owumi is our own; we are determined to support him for a successful administration.

“We will also rely on his wealth of experience to improve the lot of Rangers because he is a seasoned administrator,” the media officer added.
