Governor  Isa Yuguda of Bauchi State on Saturday in Dass warned traditional rulers in the state against engaging in partisan politics.

Yuguda gave the warning while speaking at the presentation of staff of office to the new Emir of Dass, Alhaji Usman Bilyaminu.

He said royal fathers should maintain their integrity as fathers and custodians of the culture and tradition of their people and that government would not take it lightly with any of them found engaging in politics.

“By urging the traditional rulers to mobilise their people to support government policies and programmes does not mean that they should engage in partisan politics.

“Traditional rulers should under no circumstances involve themselves in partisan politics,’’ Yuguda said.

He said that traditional rulers should maintain their integrity as fathers and custodians of the culture and tradition of their people.

“The involvement of traditional rulers in partisan politics under any guise is not only an aberration but a desecration of the traditional institution,” he said.

Yuguda implored traditional rulers to reactivate the traditional security system where strangers were being monitored, to ensure security of their domains.

He urged the new Emir to emulate his late father, Alhaji Bilyaminu Othman, whose 32-year reign witnessed tremendous development in Dass.

The governor said the late Emir was loved by his people because he was fair and just in his dealings with his subjects.

In his address, Governor Aliyu Doma of Nasarawa, expressed support for the call to enshrine constitutional roles for traditional rulers.

“They are veritable instruments for grassroots mobilisation and development as well as peace, communal integration and harmony,” Doma, who was the Chairman of the occasion, said.

In his speech, the Emir promised to follow the footsteps of his late father, particularly in the maintenance of peace and security in his domain.

Bilyaminu called on the governor to look into the possibility of creation of more districts in the Emirate, so that village heads in Dass could be upgraded to district heads.
