Group Warns Against Threat To Democracy In Nigeria
Youths under the aegies of Amalgamated Northern Political Forum and the South-South Elements Progressive Union, have warned that Nigeria stand the risks of losing its democratic gains of the past cyears, if the country continues to function without a president.
Our correspondent reports that President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s refusal to constitutionally hand over to his deputy, Goodluck Jonathan, before embarking on his medical trip to Saudi Arabia is a recipe for disaster that all patriotic Nigerians should speak out against.
A press statement sent on line described those asking the president not to hand over to his deputy as enemies of democracy and stability of the Nigerian state insisting that those urging the president to temporarily hand over to Jonathan are patriots bent on stabilising the country against internal balkanisation that could arise from any constitutional crisis.
The statement signed by the group through their national chairmen, Mr. John Yahaja and Joseph Ambakerimo, respectively, insisted that that those speaking against the president’s continued refusal to follow constitutional process since leaving the country about 42 days ago, should not be seen as hating the president.
“What we are saying is that Nigeria belongs to everybody and that no man or groups can continue to hold everybody else to ransom. We must move on as a nation to catch on with the comity of nations but we have to do the right thing” they said.
