There are strong indications that teachers in Rivers State would be paid the new Teachers Salary Scale (TSS) from this month.

The indication was given by the chairman of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Chief Moses Adiela in a chat with pressmen shortly after receiving an alumni award from the Federal College of Education (Technical), Omoku on Wednesday.

Chief Adiela stated that following negotiation with the state authorities, the government has agreed to pay the TSS, including leave bonus and imprest to teachers and principals.

The NUT chairman said teachers in the state are in for a good time considering the state government’s gesture to them adding that their welfare is paramount to the nature of their work.

It would be recalled that teachers in the state on September 18, this year embarked on strike demanding among other things the implementation of the Teachers Salary Structure (TSS) and payment of other allowances and entitlements owed them by the state government.

The strike which lasted for about one month was called off on October 14, after the union reached an agreement with the state government for the implementation of the TSS as well as the payment of all other debts owed teachers.

The assurance from the NUT boss confirms initial optimism that teachers on the state would soon heave a sigh of relief.
