Mrs Amaechi Lauds Lawmakers Over Child Rights Bill
The wife of Rivers State governor, Dame Judith Amaechi, has commended members of the state House of Assembly for quick passage of the state Child Rights Bill.
Dame Amaechi made the commendation last Thursday when she paid an advocacy visit to the state House of Assembly as part of her effort to ensure the passage of the Child Rights Bill into law by the state legislators.
She commended the state legislature for its role in the development of the state, adding that the agitations for the protection of child rights were a global issue.
The wife of the state governor and the founder of the Empowerment Support Initiative (ESI) had during her address before the bill was passed into law, urged the state lawmakers to include in the law a section that would promote the establishment of a special trust fund that would take care of injustices meted out to various categories of children in the state.
According to her, the special trust fund that would be established would take care of the abuse of children between 0-18 years including male children. She urged the lawmakers to ensure that the law takes into consideration the African Culture.
In his response, the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Tone Harry thanked the state’s First Lady for her visit to the state legislature.
Rt. Hon Harry assured her of the lawmakers’ support to ensure that the state becomes a member of the International Child Rights charter.
