PDP Will Not Rig Election – Lar
Chief Solomon Lar, first National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared that with the massive support the part enjoys across the country, it doesn’t have to rig elections to be in power.
Our correspondent reports that Lar made the assertion during the 1999 general elections “Our President won on merit alone, all governors and local government chairmen won without any question, there was no complain of rigging in 1999 election, but it was after that the people started saying rigging, rigging, rigging.
“Why should you rig, when you already enjoy the support of the people?” he said. The Tide gathers that Lar appealed against rigging, as according to him, when election is rigged, it kills democracy. Parties should not rig election for any body. When you rig election, you are trying to kill democracy, allow democracy to take its natural course.
“I am appealing to all parties to allow Nigerians to have their say at elections, because it would encourage development, unity and bring peace and everybody would accept the administration that is in power”.
Expressing hope that the electoral reforms recommendation by Justice Muhammad Uwais-led Committee would solve the country’s electoral problems, Lar said, “What we need is a very good reasonable and perfect electoral law which will give every Nigerian confidence that the election is free and fair”.
But once there is an attempt to rig, it means that the election is not free, as it would not reflect the people’s mandate and once the peoples mandate is stolen, that becomes dangerous and bad for the country” he said.
Lar who said he doesn’t support call for removal of immunity clause in the ongoing constitutional amendment by the senate, said when governors do not have immunity, they would not be able to concentrate on governance, as they will be busy fighting all sort of legal challenges.
